Hand Carved Decoys Hand carved decoys have been a part of American history even before
the Europeans began their migration to the west to start this great country.
The early settlers that came to this new land were struggling for survival
just as the Native Americans were, and hunting was a major part of their
survival. Learning quickly from the Indians, the white man took the
idea of luring the water fowls closer to strengthen their chances.
Seeing that the Indians would fashion "decoys" of their prey out of such
things as clay, rocks, and even the dead birds themselves, the settlers
were eager to utilize the method and even improve on it. Wood, being
plentiful and bouyant, was an obvious choice and therefore the carving
of decoys began. Decoy carving is one of the few American folk arts
to survive into our technologically oriented era.
